Project Quincy is a Ruby on Rails application with a MySQL database that uses information about people, places, and organizations to trace how social networks and institutions develop over time and through space.


10:15 Board Room Darden Kindle Education Project

The University of Virginia’s Darden School of Business is partnering with Amazon to pilot the new Kindle DX eReader into one section (62 students and 10 faculty) of the incoming Full-Time MBA program for the 09-10 academic year.  Darden is one of seven universities across the nation taking part in this partnership to pilot the Kindle DX. The purpose of the pilot is to assess the e-book technology and its impact on teaching and learning both in and out of the classroom. The Kindle DX is typically used as an electronic book reader; however, the Darden pilot is unique in that it requires the conversion of numerous case materials into the Kindle format. This session will provide a brief overview of the current program design, a current status regarding its implementation, and then an open discussion and Q&A session to garner feedback from participants on their ideas, interests and concerns regarding eReaders and their potential impact on higher education moving forward.

Opening remarks by Virginia Delegate Rob Bell, who strengthened Virginia’s identity theft laws to support victims (HB2402), followed by presentation on preventing identity theft, information on safe Internet shopping, general computer and Internet security, and important information about the coming rollout of the enhanced version of NetBadge.

The MBA for Executives is a graduate MBA program designed for working professionals. It has the identical curriculum and faculty as the fulltime residential program but is delivered with a combination of on grounds residencies and approximately 1/3 through distance education.

To fill that one third effectively, the MBAExec team has utilized a number of tools and services that will be discussed in this session. Discussion topics include:

1:00 South Meeting Room Empowering Yourself with Smart Goals

A discussion on how LSPs can proactively write smart goals for themselves that align with the mission of the University and with their departments in relation to the current roll out of the new Performance Management tool and process at UVA. We will discuss what a SMART goal is, how it can be formulated, what to expect in the new process, what to expect from the tool, and how LSPs can get the most out of the goal setting process.

1:00 Board Room Collab Link Tools

Link Tool is a tool in Collab that allows instructors and site owners to add external applications to their course or collaboration sites using web services.  Link Tool has currently been used with applications built in Perl, PHP, ColdFusion, Ruby On Rails, and .Net.  In this presentation we will explain the tool, the installation process, and some policy issues regarding information exchange between Collab and the external applications. Anyone who has applications they would like to use in the Collab framework is invited to attend.

NowComment.com® is an online commenting tool that lets groups of any size have focused, threaded conversations about specific sentences and paragraphs in a document. UVA will have university-wide access to NowComment through Shanti in January 2009 (it’s available now for those who want to use it). Today’s presentation will provide a brief demo of the software and address support issues.
